Altun Ha was first settlement somewhere around 250 BC, with construction of the buildings beginning in 100 AD and continuing throughout the Classic period that ended in the 10th century. Some 10,000 Mayans lived in and around Altun Ha, which was a significant trading center as evidenced by the large amounts of jade and obsidian excavated here in the early sixties and seventies. Once at the cave tubing outpost, you’ll be given a basic orientation and safety briefing before heading off on a 30-minute hike which includes wading through a few knee-deep water streams. Inside you’ll see intricate crystalline formations that line the cave with a majestic rise and fall of stalagmites and stalactites that add to the serene richness and grandiose of Xibalba as it’s known. READY! SET! GO! Push off from the wooden platform and zip along the aerial cable at canopy level where a guide will be waiting for you at the next platform. A couple platforms, into your Indiana Jones adventure, you’ll see the “hammock bridge” hanging almost 120 feet above the beautiful forest floor.

Easy Going five hour Tour, see the Ancient city of Altun Ha, plazas where 2000 years ago was the center of Maya civilization ceremonial activity. viewing the temple pyramids which during excavations yielded royal burial tombs laden with artifacts such as jade necklaces, pendants, face masks, stingray spines, monkey skulls, jaguar skin loincloth, manatee bones with writing, ceramic vessels once used for bloodletting rituals and incense burning. optional, go up the stairs to view the sacrificial altar where the 1968 excavations found animal bones, eccentric flint and jade objects in a burnt fashion. from atop the Sun Temple see the whole kingdom of Altun ha and reminisce the days of the Classic Maya that once ruled this land. then it's a short drive to the "baboon sanctuary" where we walk 5 minutes the Rainforest jungle trail and encounter a family of howler monkeys.
