A good example of this history is the history of its cathedrals, several churches have served this role until the very modern cone-shaped Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro was build. Another example is the Benedictine monastery in Rio with its baroque church which baths in gold, the richness that was gathered on the backs of an army of thousands of slaves.
