Bear and Cubs Photography
A mother bear can bring yearling cubs to the hide area in early parts of May. Although cubs are already one year old, male bears are a big threat to them, but they understand this and can escape. Yearling cubs are bigger than new-born cubs, but they are still clearly smaller than their mother.
The best time to photograph cubs is during August and September when newborn cubs and yearling cubs visit the hide area regularly with their mothers. Cubs, as all bears, are omnivores and the biggest part of their diet is meat, with around one third of the diet containing berries. The yearling cubs’ life is now at the point when they are learning the basics of independent life. Their behaviour may seem unsure, dubious and even silly compared to mature fully grown bears.
Wolverine Photography in Summer
The transition into summer creates new possibilities for Wolverine photography, most notably the mid-summer sun creating almost 24 hours of light available for photography. This means photographic opportunities are almost endless with regard to the amount of daylight.
During summer, adult wolverines are busy foraging for food to feed their cubs, so feeding trips are regular. The probability of observing wolverine during these months is between 70-95%. Eye level windows have been installed in hides 11,15,17-25. These windows offer photographers a unique
opportunity to achieve an intimate eye level perspective with wolverine as well as other animals.
September – October The activity levels in autumn are at a similar or higher level to the previous months however autumn brings new possibilities for photographers in terms of autumnal colours and scenery.
Bear Photography on Autumn
September is the time of autumn colours and an increase in cub sightings. In September bears arrive to the hide area earlier than in summer because competition for food is greater. Due to increased visit duration in autumn there is a higher chance to see several bears at the same time. Because the bears usually arrive earlier in the autumn, the day timetable in September is set one hour earlier. This allows photographers to better utilise the daylight hours. Autumn offers different light and colour and thus new opportunities for different photographic results. After sunset and before sunrise there are a couple of hours of twilight for photography. On cloudy days photographic time from the hides in the forest is short at about 1-3 hours. Autumn evenings are twilit and nights are dark, increasing the chances to photograph the Northern Lights and the full moon.
