Tokyo: Sumo Ring Challenge & Street Food in a Real Shotengai
Two things you cannot get in Shinjuku: a sumo ring anyone can stand on, and a Tokyo neighborhood that is not for tourists.
Professional sumo bars women from the dohyo. Here, anyone can step on it.
And the street outside is no preserved attraction. Sunamachi Ginza is one of Tokyo's three great shotengai: 140 shops, trading since 1932, still drawing 15,000 residents on an ordinary weekday. You are not being shown old Tokyo. You are standing in it. Come early, buy your own food from those shops, and eat it beside the ring. Food is not included, and that is deliberate.
Then 90 minutes: 30 on how sumo actually works, 30 watching two former professionals fight a few meters away, 30 for your turn.
Taking part is optional. If you try, we provide a private changing area, a full change of clothes and a real mawashi. You step barefoot onto the clay and face a wrestler. You will lose. That is the point.
Photos on the dohyo afterwards. Max 40 guests. Year-round. English at every show.
