Trevi Fountain Underground Guided Walking Tour
The Trevi Fountain Underground Guided Walking Tour is unique because it takes you beyond the famous fountain and underneath the Trevi neighborhood, into a real archaeological site that most visitors never see. You go underground beneath Trevi. The Water City archaeological area lies more than 9 meters below today’s street level, just steps from the fountain.
It’s literally connected to the water of Trevi. You can see the ancient Aqua Virgo aqueduct’s distribution tank (castellum aquae) and water filtering through the ancient masonry. This is why the site is called the “City of Water.” The excavations reveal an Imperial-era apartment block (insula) that was later transformed into a wealthy Roman domus, along with later structures built over the ancient remains.
* There are genuine archaeological discoveries, not reconstructions. The site contains ancient marble decorations, African amphorae, architectural remains, and a remarkable hoard of more than 800 coins.
