The yang of the bright and beautiful side of the city's 1200 year history is paralleled by the yin of the macabre, the bizarre and the bloody aspects of the story of Japan's old capital. Starting at Yasaka Shrine we will weave our way south through the back streets of Gion to Kiyomizu Temple, then descending through the Toribeno cemetery, one of the oldest and largest burial grounds dating back to the founding of the city. We pass through the shrine for cutting off bad relationships, stop by a 500 year old haunted candy shop, peek at the well that is said to have been used as a portal to the underworld by a famed Japanese sorcerer, and visit 'the hill of ears' monument.
Although the 'dark' will be highlighted in this experience, I also aim to impart an understanding of Japanese religious and cultural beliefs, and you will end the day with a more intimate understanding of Kyoto and a more balanced and realistic view of one of the world’s most fascinating cultures.

Hiroshima 3-Hour Peace Walking Tour with a Local Guide
A small-group walking tour with a Hiroshima-based guide. Never more than 10 people — not a bus tour.
Most Hiroshima tours cover the Peace Park, the Dome and the museum. You can do those on your own. This tour takes you where you can't go alone:
・A working elementary school, 460 m from the hypocenter, where survivors' chalk messages were found under the plaster after 54 years
・The bank that reopened two days after the bomb, and lent its own counters to ten other banks
・The hypocenter itself — outside a clinic still run by the grandson of the doctor who came back that night to treat the injured
・A stone that still carries the shadow of the statue standing in front of it
・The tree that came back the following spring, whose seeds are now planted overseas
etc..
About 3 hours on foot, in English. You'll walk it with a handful of travellers from other countries.
By the end you'll have met about a dozen survivors of 6 August. Not all of them are people.
