The first two days follow one of the common Salkantay trails, but on the 3rd day we depart the Salkantay trails to enjoy a less trodden path that connects with the Inca Trail. You even get the opportunity to walk a portion of the Inca Trail on the 3rd day.
The Salkantay Trek is named for Mount Salkantay (20,574 feet). This Mountain is higher than any mountain in North America. On the Salkantay trek you will see gorgeous blue lakes, stunning glaciers and rain forest. The last portion of this particular trek has the ecosystem more typical of the Inca Trail with lush green vegetation and inca ruins. 07:00 AM We leave the city of Cusco for Chincheros, a picturesque town known for its impressive colonial church and agricultural terraces, where you can learn the art of traditional fabric. Then, we head to the Salineras de Maras, a unique landscape of thousands of small salt pools used since pre-Inca times. Later, we explored Moray, an archaeological complex of circular terraces that are believed to have functioned as an agricultural research center to experiment with different microclimates. After a delicious lunch in Urubamba (Tunupa Restaurant), the heart of the Sacred Valley, we visited Ollantaytambo, an impressive Inca fortress, famous for its huge terraces and history as one of the last bastions of resistance.
